By increasing pressure, water can be forced through the membrane, resulting in a clear separation between pure water (permeate) and water containing salts and impurities (reject). The osmotic membrane, representing the highest level of filtration possible, acts as a barrier not only for salts and inorganic substances but also for organic substances with a molecular mass greater than 100 daltons.
